Miniscrews

What are miniscrews?
These appliances are small mini screws (2 mm diameter) placed in the bone to help some desired tooth movement. It is sort of a “power boost” for difficult orthodontic movements.
They are attached to the braces/teeth and can help bring teeth to the back, to the front, space closure, bite closure, amongst other problem corrections.

Placing miniscrews
Miniscrews are very simple to be placed. The procedure requires only gum anesthesia and takes a few minutes. They can be place by a dentist, an orthodontist, an oral surgeon, and a periodontist. At the end of the treatment, they are removed.

Hygiene
In order to maintain the miniscrew in place, it is very important to keep it clean. Therefore, patients should always brush around it.

Miniplates

What are miniplates?
Miniplates are another anchorage device used for orthodontic tooth movement. It is a small plate fixed in the bone that has an extension inside the mouth.

Placing miniplates
Miniplates are more invasive than miniscrews. The procedure requires local anesthesia an should be performed by an oral surgeon. At the end of the treatment, they are removed.

Hygiene
In order to maintain the miniplate in place, it is very important to keep it clean. Therefore, patients should always brush around it.
