First aid for minor accidents with your braces!

Is something not quite right? These tips can help you not to disrupt your treatment.

Tips for:

  • Loose bracket
  • Protruding wire
  • Broken activator/plate
  • AdvanSync screw
  • Loose splint
  • Broken Invisalign

Loose slot

Do you have a loose slot and/or bracket? If this does not bother you, just leave it alone. If it does bother you, you can try to snip off the wire (or have someone do it for you) with nail scissors or wire cutters, so that the bracket (or a protruding wire) no longer troubles you. When you are on vacation, you should not go to the local orthodontist because every orthodontist uses their own brand of brackets. After your vacation contact us for an appointment.

Protruding wire

Is a protruding wire sticking in your cheek? Get someone to snip this off as short as possible after the last tie. This can be done with nail scissors/clippers or wire cutters. If this does not work, push a small ball of wax onto it. If you have no more wax, you can also stick a piece of sugar-free chewing gum onto it.

Broken activator/plate

Is your activator or plate broken? If it does not hurt, you can continue to wear it. You might be able to level a sharp edge with a nail file. If it hurts to wear the braces, remove them, and contact us 6 for an appointment.

Invisalign

If an Invisalign aligner is broken (e.g. a tear in the material), you can continue to wear it if there is no pain. If it does hurt to wear it, change both aligners for the preceding or next set.

AdvanSync screw

If the screw is a little loose, you can try to tighten it up with the Allen key that you received from us. Please note, you cannot tighten the screw all the way; there is a bit of play in it. It’s enough once the screw is secure. If your AdvanSync has become partially detached, or something is broken, the best thing to do is to remove it completely. This can be done with the supplied Allen key. Remove the AdvanSync on both sides. If you go to an orthodontist/dentist who is on duty, you should take the Allen key with you. Make a new appointment with us anyway.

Loose splint

Is the splint behind your teeth loose? Try to make an appointment with your dentist to have this fixed as soon as possible. Make a new appointment with us.
